A Yorkshire-based nature restoration company will lead the roll-out of its Habitat Bank Scheme following new environmental legislation, creating twenty new jobs.
Environment Bank, founded in 2006, is a leading provider of Net Biodiversity Gains (BNGs) through its ‘credits’ program – whereby habitat affected by development is created with a minimum gain of 10% for nature. Property and commercial developers, infrastructure companies and businesses in the UK are now required by law to insure BNG on all new projects or the building permit risks being refused.
Environment Bank has hired another 20 professionals across the UK, including environmentalists, marketing, operational and legal experts, bringing its workforce to 26.
Professor David Hill, CBE, Founder of Environment Bank said: “BNG means leaving the natural environment in a better state than before the construction of a development or infrastructure project. Ensuring that this happens through the planning process has now become law through the environmental law.
“This presents a greater opportunity than ever to restore nature across our country on a large scale. This is essential because we have witnessed an unprecedented 60% decline in biodiversity over the past five decades.
James Cross, Managing Director of Environment Bank, added, “We have the largest and most experienced team of BNG experts in the country, and a robust and risk-free process in place to deliver BNG at scale. The first of hundreds of home banks will open before Christmas, allowing developers to meet their new legal requirements in a simple and straightforward manner, rather than risking the denial of a building permit.
“The past year has been a joy – we have a renewed board, a new office located at the University of York, a large team of handpicked experts spread across England and plan to create 25 new jobs over the next 12 months. Even though we have grown at a rapid pace, we all share a common set of values and a shared vision. A vision built around our new plan for the planet, which will improve nature and unlock sustainable growth. ”
The Environment Bank Biodiversity Loans are the first of their kind in England and provide a ready-to-use, risk-free service to landowners, planning authorities and developers.
